Parent and Child Learn to Swim Lifeguarding Water Safety Instructor Course

WHALE Tales

(ages 5-12)

Parent and Child Aquatics

Developed for children 6 months to 5 years of age, American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.

Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they may begin Learn-to-Swim courses.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills: designed to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills: provides student with opportunities for success with
fundamental skills

Level 3 - Stroke Development: builds on previous level by providing additional
guided practice

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement: develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

Level 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency: refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with options designed to meet individual needs. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advance courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. These options include: The American Red Cross

Lifeguard Training

American Red Cross Lifeguarding offers the highest quality training standards in skill instruction, professional lifeguard responsibilities, first aid and CPR/AED training. It consists of four stand-alone, courses to teaches surveillance and rescue skills for a specific water environment, including:

bulletLifeguarding – for facilities with traditional pools
bulletWaterfront Lifeguarding – for facilities with non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers, as well as traditional pools
bulletWaterpark Lifeguarding – for waterpark environments, multi-attraction facilities and traditional pools
bulletShallow Water Attendant – for facilities with shallow water attractions up to 4 feet deep such as catch basins at the foot of slides, winding rivers and kiddie pools

Also under the Lifeguarding umbrella are:

bulletGuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow
GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow is a program for 11-14 year-olds that provides a foundation of aquatic and leadership knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future successful completion of an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.  The GuardStart curriculum contains multiple units in five categories (prevention, fitness, response, leadership, professionalism), with the entire program totaling fifty lessons. GuardStart is designed to be flexible, including the length of the course and the order of the lessons. There is no instructor authorization required to lead the GuardStart program. It is led by program and activity leaders.
bulletLifeguard Management
Lifeguard Management is designed to teach aquatic managers and lifeguard supervisors how to effectively manage lifeguards and keep patrons, lifeguards and facilities safe. The course, which is approximately 7¼ hours in length, includes information on the selection and training of lifeguards, management topics, record and report templates and nearly 100 in-service training outlines.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course provides instructor candidates (proficient swimmers ages 16+) the training needed to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.  As a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), you can:

bulletEarn money--or join a volunteer team--while you help people learn valuable skills
bulletLearn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career
bulletMake a difference in people's lives

Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children or adults refine their strokes, or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
 

Longfellow's WHALE Tales

Longfellow's WHALE Tales is targeted to children ages 5 to 12 to teach safe behavior in, on and around the water. The materials in the Longfellow's WHALE Tales K-6 Educational Packet are designed to give children an awareness of being safe around the water and to help promote healthful aquatic recreation.
